    Emerging Manager Searches Will Return, But When?

    Hang in there emerging managers, the searches will return.

    “We’ve seen activity starting to come back to the market,” said Les Hollis, ceo of manager-of-managers Bivium Capital Partners. “I think there are a few plans that are back looking at the market.”

    It’s how quickly that activity turns into program creations and searches that is still in question. “I’m going to be optimistic and hope that stuff is going to happen this year as well, but the issue with our space is it does take time, particularly for a new investor…to go from soup to nuts,” Hollis said.

    Smaller Mgrs. Continue To Outperform: NTGA Study

    Smaller asset management firms again performed better than larger firms from 2004 to 2008, though the margin of victory was narrower than had been seen in the past, according to an initial summary of an updated study from Northern Trust Global Advisors on the performance advantage of emerging managers relative to larger firms.

    THEN: The $15 billion Los Angeles Fire & Police Pension System is interested in emerging hedge fund-of-funds, according to General Manager Michael Perez. Perez said the plan’s staff and consultant Pension Consulting Alliance will be looking at the space, however there is no specific timeline for a decision. The interest stems from the plan’s current hedge fund-offunds search, which was initiated after PCA recommended increasing the plan’s hedge fund-of-funds allocation to 5% from 2%. PCA brought finalists to the board last month, however no decision was made.
